We all know how overwhelming and complicated skincare can be.We often always hear about what we should do to our skin and what new products and at home remedies to try and experiment with, but I don't think we hear enough about the don'ts of skin care and the bad habits that gradually destroy our skin over time. I created a list of my top five skin don'ts from my personal experience through out the years with my own skin. Here are my top five:
USING THE WRONG PRODUCTS
With the billions of products and brands out there, where do we begin to find the right products that are going to do right by our skin and meet its special needs. Understanding your skin is essential for having healthy, flawless skin. You cannot have healthy skin if your not meeting your skins needs and requirements.Ask yourself what is my skin lacking? If you have dry skin, look for products that focus on ultimate hydration and that are gentle and moisturizing. If your skin is oily, try to find products that contain salycic acid and benzoyl peroxide to maintain and control the over production of oil in your skin, Use the right products for your skins special and important needs.
OVER-EXFOLIATION
Over exfoliation can strip the skin of its naturals oils causing the skin to be dry, blotchy and easily irritated. I was an exfoliating addict and kind of over did it and caused my skin a great deal of stress. My skin was never easily irritated and was able to withstand strong ingredients in products. After my stint with over-exfoliation years ago, I'm still paying the price. My skin is easily irritated now and I've developed a mild form of contact dermatitis, ughhhh. I cannot experiment with a lot of products and constantly have to be cautious and watch out for what goes onto my skin, which is a huge bummer.
PICKING AND SQUEEZING
THIS IS A NO-NO!! If you see a pimple, leave it alone!! IT WILL GO AWAY IN TIME!! Picking and squeezing is horrible!! Not only are you causing the bacteria to go deeper within the skins surface, but your putting your skin under a great deal of stress and trauma by squeezing and picking at it. The skin over time looses it's elasticity and reveals all the damage that has been done throughout the early years, in the later years. Before, I use to pick the whiteheads out of my nose because I just couldn't stand the sight of them. Now, I have a few permanently enlarged damaged pores on my nose. They aren't that visible unless I point them out, but it sucks to know that I was the one that caused this irreversible damage by not being able to keep my hands off of my face. SO KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF YOUR BEAUTIFUL FACE!!
OVER PAMPERING
Doing to much will just confuse and overwhelm the skin. Do not use 50 million products that you'll just end up chucking into your garbage can a week later. Stick to an easy, basic and affordable routine. Remember, consistency is key in skin care.
* Toning is an optional step, but if you use toner and have acne prone/ oily skin and find it helpful to your skin then this should be the routine you should follow.
* Serum is also optional , I recommend this for people who have acne prone / oily skin because after using a lot of harsh products to fight off acne you skin becomes in dire need of hydration and nutrients. Using a vitamin infused serum will help prevent dryness and irritation.
WEEKDAYS ROUTINE = CLEANSER, TONER, (SERUM), MOISTURIZER
WEEKENDS ROUTINE = CLEANSER ,TONER, CLEANSING MASK, SERUM, MOISTURIZER
* If your like me and don't use toner and have dry, sensitive skin, here is my personal routine.
WEEKDAYS ROUTINE : CLEANSER, CREAM MOISTURIZER
WEEKENDS ROUTINE : STEAM,CLEANSER (exfoliation/extractions), HYDRATING MASK/HONEY MASK, CREAM MOISTURIZER
I steam my face for 3 mins to loosen up the dead skin and then exfoliate during the cleansing portion of my weekend routine by adding cleanser to a facial brush and removing all the dry and flaky skin. By doing this ,your removing all the dead surface skin revealing all the new and healthy skin. That's when your able to properly give your skin nourishment with serums and hydrating products. I'm currently using Karuna's Antioxidant Facial Mask and Serum All In One or I grab some raw honey and let it sit on my face for a few hours.Afterward I slather my face in Cetaphil Cream to promote repair and hydration into my skin.My skin looks more relaxed and less irritated after following this routine and I'm happy with the results :)
UNDER PAMPERING
Pay attention to your skin. If you don't really care for it, it's not going to be in it's best condition. Pamper your skin once in a while and try a deep cleansing facial mask. Face masks are essential to skin care because it cleans all the deeper impurities within the skin surface that you can't see.You can avoid a lot of future breakouts and bad skin reactions by just implementing cleansing masks into your skin care routine. You don't have to make it a weekly ritual, but try to slip in an appointment with your local spa at least once or twice a month.
